Apple ARKit - How Brands Are Using iOS's Augmented Reality Platform

Summary

For many brands, augmented reality is an interesting technology but too expensive or too complex to operate. However, following the launch of the ARKit augmented reality app development kit by Apple on September 12, 2017, building AR apps is now accessible to everyone. Discover the best augmented reality apps created by brands with Apple ARKit.

Ikea Place, an Apple ARKit app to try out new furniture

In the Ikea Place app, users can choose from more than 2000 3D products, modeled on the various pieces of furniture of the famous Swedish chain. The application then allows this furniture to be placed in the real world through the iPhone's camera. This allows you to check in advance how the piece of furniture will fit into a decor. It is possible to move the furniture freely, to rotate, to change the size or the color of the product with ease. A button then allows you to buy the furniture directly.

The Patr贸n Experience, an Apple ARKit application to visit the Hacienda Patr贸n distillery

The Patr贸n Experience app, available for free on the App Store since September 20, 2017, allows users to visit the Hacienda Patr贸n distillery located in Jalisca, Mexico. As a first step, users are encouraged to plant their own agave field on any flat surface. After this first step, the distillery appears, and the owner tells its story, and describes the distillation process and the flavors of the different products. Patr贸n Tequila's goal was to allow consumers to see behind the scenes of the distillery.

Cambria AR, an Apple ARKit application to change the worktop in your kitchen

Cambria, builder of countertops, created an Apple ARKit application called Cambria AR, allowing users to scan their kitchens to visualize a new worktop in augmented reality. The user can scan the surface he wishes to change, then delimit its perimeter, and finally choose between 10 different designs. Previously, Cambria already offered a mobile application, but it only allowed you to view 2D renderings.

Wayfair 3D View in Room, another Apple ARKit application to choose your furniture

The new 3D View in Room feature, added by Wayfair to its mobile application, allows you to visualize furniture in a room using augmented reality. While browsing the Wayfair furniture catalog, the user can press the View in Room button, available on some products, to view the furniture in 3D within their environment through the iPhone camera. As with Ikea Place, it is possible to change the size of the product, perform rotations, and add the piece of furniture to your basket.

Overstock, an Apple ARKit application to redecorate your home in augmented reality

L鈥檃pplication Overstock allows user to try 8 different product categories in 3D. Among these categories, we find in particular rugs, children's furniture, or decorative accessories. A View in My Room button allows the user to view the product in 3D, through the camera of his smartphone. Like Ikea Place, the user must first scan a flat surface. The user can then change the size of the product, rotate, and order the product with one click.
