SideQuest: a tool for sideloading apps on Oculus Quest

Summary

Available since May 21, 2019, the Oculus Quest is an excellent VR headset. Sales are already excellent, and it is therefore very tempting for developers to offer their games and apps on this device.

Unfortunately for them, Facebook is particularly strict in the selection applications compatible with Quest. A large number of developers see their projects rejected after several years of work and are invited to launch their games on Oculus Rift for PC.

Dance what contexts, the application distribution tool "SideQuest" has been very successful since the start of the week. It simply allows the sideloading of applications on Oculus Quest, which gives developers the opportunity to bypass the filter imposed by Facebook.

SideQuest used by Guy Godin to offer Steam game streaming via Virtual Desktop

This is notably what developer Guy Godin did for his Virtual Desktop application, an update of which was rejected from Quest last week because of a function allowing the streaming of PC games. Thanks to SideQuest, he was able to distribute the update containing this feature without going through the official channel.

To use SideQuest, you will need to follow the same process as usual for sideloading applications on Oculus. It will therefore be a question of indicating to Oculus that you are a developer, then to install development software. Do not hesitate to consult our complete tutorial at this address.

By allowing developers to bring their VR games and apps to Oculus Quest without Facebook's approval, SideQuest could quickly establish itself as a premium alternative platform for the distribution of applications on the standalone VR headset… download it on GitHub at this address.
