With Trinus VR, it is possible to play any PC game in virtual reality without having to invest in a VR Ready PC and a high-end headset like the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive. Thanks to a conversion system, it is possible to transform all PC games into VR games for smartphones. Concretely, Trinus displays the screen of your Windows computer on the screen of your Android smartphone in VR mode. The software also creates a fake 3D effect for games that don't natively support 3D. These games can then be streamed using a smartphone virtual reality headset such as the Google Cardboard.

In addition to converting classic games to virtual reality, Trinus supports all games in the Steam VR catalog. The software is also compatible with all classic Nintendo NES games. Several games also offer built-in system support. This is the case for the games Survival Shoooter, Pigeon Poop, and Sanity Razor.

To enjoy Trinus VR, all you need is a smartphone with a gyroscope and a Snapdragon 800 or better processor. Your PC must have at least a fourth generation Intel i5 processor, or an AMD FX-6350 or higher, and must run on Windows 7 or a later version. You will also need a VR-type headset compatible with Google's Cardboard platform.

Tutorial: how to use Trinus VR

In order to use Trinus VR, you must first download the Trinus VR PC Server application, and the Trinus VR client on your smartphone. To download Trinus VR PC Server, click on this link. Open the TGsetup.exe file, and follow the instructions to install the software. Then download the Trinus VR smartphone client from the Android Play Store or the iOS App Store. The application is offered for free in a Lite version, but game sessions are limited to 10 minutes. The paid version is available for € 9,99. You can now use Trinus VR.

You will then need to connect your smartphone and your PC. To do this, two options are available to you. You can connect your devices through a USB cable, or directly in WiFi. The wired connection is the easiest to set up, and guarantees optimal performance.

Connect the PC to the smartphone via USB

Simply connect your smartphone to your PC with a USB cable. Then activate the USB tethering on your smartphone in Settings> Mobile hotspot> USB modem. Then open the Trinus app on Windows and the Trinus VR app on your smartphone.

Press the connect button on both apps. You should see your Windows screen appear in VR mode on your smartphone. Beware of disable mobile data on your smartphone, or Windows may use the data to connect the PC to the internet.

Connect the PC to the smartphone via WiFi

It is also possible to connect the smartphone and the PC via WiFi. Be content with connect your two devices to the same WiFi network, and establish the connection from the application on mobile and computer. Be careful, however, this connection mode generates significant latency. It is recommended to use USB tethering.

How to configure Trinus VR

Once the smartphone and the PC are connected, the Trinus VR app for Android will display the image of the Windows PC. You can then launch the game of your choice to play it in VR on your headset. To enjoy an optimal experience on Trinus VR, it is better to run your game in windowed mode. Also make sure to set the game graphics to the minimum, with the lowest possible resolution (4: 3 or 8: 9).

Once the game is launched, insert the smartphone into the Google Cardboard, and place it on your face. You can direct your gaze with head-tracking and use the computer mouse as a controller. It is also possible to connect a bluetooth controller for a more complete gaming experience.

From the Trinus PC application menu, the cogwheel-shaped tab provides access to advanced settings. From this menu, you can select the model of VR headset you use to automatically optimize the settings. You can also configure 3D, motion detection, position tracking, sensitivity, distortion etc ...

For each game, you should optimize the settings differently for a comfortable experience. So take care to carefully study each parameter to find the ideal settings.

How to Solve Major Trinus VR Problems

The Trinus VR project is still in development. Therefore, many bugs remain, and performance is not always there. Here are the main problems you might face, and how to fix them.

Wireless connection is not working

For many users, the wireless WiFi connection does not work. It is therefore essential to prepare a USB cable to use in case of need.

Games do not launch in VR mode

The game engine must support stereoscopic 3D or VR for Trinus VR to be able to convert. Otherwise, Trinus uses its Fake 3D technology to force SBS stereoscopic display. Some games, however, cannot be forced to display in 3D. If you encounter this situation, you will need to use a third-party application like Vireio or Vorpx to play incompatible games in VR.

Content is not displayed correctly

Each headset compatible with the Cardboard platform is equipped with lenses with different properties, which will not always be detected by Trinus VR. Therefore, the content may not be displayed correctly. Presets are available for several popular devices like the VR One, Freefly, Homido, but for some helmets, it will be necessary to make the settings manually. You can make advanced settings from the PC application, and see changes in real time on your smartphone screen.

Head Tracking is not working properly

Head tracking problems are related to hardware limitations. To remedy, you can try the different capture modes offered in the advanced settings of Trinus VR. If the image tends to vibrate, you can try the Sensor Jitter Filter option. Also remember to calibrate your phone's sensors and make sure there is no magnetic interference nearby.

Trinus PSVR: Play Steam VR PC Games on PlayStation VR

Developer Trinus VR has recently offered an unofficial driver for playing SteamVR games on PlayStation VR. Thanks to Trinus PSVR, PSVR users can access all games in the SteamVR catalog from a PC.

The Trinus PSVR driver for Windows, very easy to install, allows you to use the Sony VR headset on a PC. The software mimics the communication between HTC Vive and the computer, and allows access to Valve's virtual reality content library, SteamVR.

Head tracking is of course supported. On the other hand, the driver is not yet compatible with motion tracking via the Sony helmet camera. This is the main drawback of this solution. Without a camera, the PlayStation Move controllers also cannot be used. Many developers are actively working to resolve this issue right now. Note also that Trinus PSVR can only run games at a frequency of 60hz.

The PC compatible PSVR thanks to Trinus PSVR

The user experience of SteamVR games on PSVR with Trinus PSVR is similar to that of SteamVR games launched on Oculus Rift DK1. Of progress is still to be made, but this driver significantly expands the size of the catalog of PlayStation VR compatible games.

In the eyes of many users, the PSVR is considered the most comfortable of the VR headsets. It also doesn't have to be ashamed in terms of image quality and screen accuracy.
